Year 5

Autumn Term

Year 5 Newsletter December 2024

This half term, the children in Year 5 have really flourished and demonstrated just how resilient and mature they can be. We have been blown away by their amazing writing, extremely impressed with their awesome artwork and bowled over by their sportsmanship! Roll on 2025!

This Half Term

The children wrote some incredible roller coaster pitches for Alton Towers. Everyone’s ideas were so innovative and the children really pushed themselves to confidently present their ideas to the class. We have also really enjoyed reading the children’s work linked to ‘The Christmas Truce’. The writing has been so heartfelt, empathetic and packed with fantastic features. Handwriting is much improved too – keep it up! In maths, the children have risen to the challenge of tackling fractions – well done everyone! The children have made some wonderful wire bird sculptures in art; explored Ancient Greece; danced the Hakka; learnt all about lifecycles and developed their netball skills (Mrs Atcheson is excited about some potential netball stars for next year!) All wrapped up with lots of festive fun – what a great few weeks it has been.

Please see our year group page on the school website for some pictures of the children’s fantastic learning.

Coming up in Spring 1:

Next half term, we will be kicking off our Space unit with an immersive visit from the Planetarium and a fun day of astronaut training. Our writing will be inspired by ‘The Martian’ to tie in with our topic. In maths, we will be taking on long multiplication before returning to fractions. We will also be introducing decimals and percentages. We are very excited about our ‘Forest School’ sessions with Mrs Cooper-Kight. Full details of dates and everything the children need will be sent out on Parentmail. In these sessions, the children will enjoy lots of team building activities as well as designing their own soup and bread which they will then cook on the open fire. In geography, the children will learn all about North America; they will continue to explore different styles of dance and will start their first gymnastics unit in PE; we will teach them about the risks associated with smoking and taking drugs in PSHE and last but by no means least, prepare to be catapulted back to the 90s as we will be teaching the children the theme tune of ‘The Fresh Prince of Bel Air’ in music. Now that we have finished reading ‘Wonder’, our next class novel is ‘Letters from the Lighthouse’ by Emma Carroll, which links to our WWII topic later in the term.

Important Reminders

Homework is sent out on a Friday and is due back the following Wednesday.

Please continue to encourage your child to read for 10 minutes a day and practise their times tables regularly.

Please make sure reading books and bookmarks are kept in their plastic wallets and are in school daily.

Please remind your children to stay off the grass and stick to walking on the paths around school to avoid muddy feet coming into school.
