Horsforth Newlaithes

Year 5

Autumn Term

6th September 2024

Coming up this term:

Welcome to Year 5! It has been great getting to know all of the children this week. They have settled in brilliantly and we have been really impressed with their enthusiasm to learn and kind nature. We are looking forward to working closely with you to ensure that your child has a happy and successful year.

Our literacy work will focus on non-fiction writing linked to our upcoming residential to Buckden. In geography, the children will also improve their mapping skills using Buckden as a focus. In maths, we will begin the term by extending our understanding of place value. This will include recapping rounding, ordering and comparing numbers before moving onto addition and subtraction.

There will be a real practical focus to our science work this term as the children will be exploring properties and changes of materials. This will include lots of investigations about solubility, separating mixtures and reversible changes. In art, we will refine our painting and drawing whilst exploring the architecture of eco-housing in the city. The children enjoyed exploring different anthems in music this week and they will be using notation to compose their own chorus. Get ready to hear lots of Bon Jovi singing at home!

This half term we will look at mental health and emotional wellbeing during our PSHE lessons as well as discovering why some places and journeys are special in RE. Our computing work will focus on basic skills and keeping safe online. We are hoping that the weather stays dry for our football and orienteering topics in PE.

Buckden Residential

The children will meet in the hall on Monday 16th September at 8:30am. If you are planning to stay and wave us off, please park away from the school if possible as coaches struggle to drive and park outside of school. Children will need a day bag containing their lunch, water bottle and coat as well as their bag or small suitcase containing their clothes. Please label all clothing and pack for all weathers! Any medicine should be clearly labelled and handed in to a member of staff on the morning. Please remember to provide travel sickness tablets for the return journey if your child requires them. Look out for updates about the children’s adventures which will be posted to the school X (Twitter) page whilst they are away.
